Fishing has been slow as of late with cold temp's and lethargic fish aka lock jaw.
We have been running trips out of the upper coast in the surf and offshore. The only good fishing has been for sheephead around San Luis Pass and various locations around Galveston Texas. The big trout action is another story in the back bay of Galveston Bay Complex ( West Bay) via the kayak and wade fishing. We have been on some solid trout working shell and pot holes, drop offs. The bait of choice of course is the Corky from Paul Brown and family.

Jacks on the Run Surf Fishing
Spent the last two days running the surf in search or some jacks and red's with Cougman from Wade fishing.com
The first day we arrived to pristine conditions with good water for our area and surf running 2-3 and today running in the 1-2 come noon today with winds just about nothing till then.
After noon the winds picked up on a big wade gut I have been catching on for awhile. It's not much but here are some of the catches combined
Mullet's the ticket right now "live"...... :yy

The Watch Tower
As any good surfer is vigilant about his or her waves so is the fisherman.
The morning calm from last nights storm front brought a temp change of 10 degrees and North winds. Well anyone knowing a surfers true dislikes are North winds. The north winds are somewhat a welcoming for surf fisherman. It makes the waves and water some what better for sharking. You can paddle out baits without being pounded by the breaks or cross chop waves. This all relates back to yesterdays topic "think it's not work" comment. This is some of the most back breaking work you can get yourself into. It will take you hostage. The great Captain Billy Sandifer I believe said "It will take you prisoner". So just to clarify I was somewhat quoting him in saying that about the hostage comment.
Back to the North wind? Yes I am on the watch tower looking for the window I need to feed my addiction.
Good fishing to all.

Surf Fishing Wo's
Some may think fishing is sitting and waiting, but it's not. There is allot of work time and effort that go's into managing a good day on the surf. It starts from the day before for me. If I am coming home from a surf trip I am already planning my next mission for tomorrow. When I am on the surf I think about tomorrows course that I will set. This is a relentless sport that will dully make you pay the price.
The management of your gear is number one. If you got a 4x4 that is a big plus and number one friend and should come first. If you have a Wife treat her good she is the one that enables you to be who you are with good vibes. If you got good gear keep it that way. There will be times when grinds are just that and no fish come your way. I mentioned having good gear? You do not have to have top of the line everything for surf fishing but it sure helps.

Cool Breeze
Well what we call high winds is more like a good breeze in Texas. I guess high winds would be a tornado? Well off the beaten path today from the surf for me. The days away from Surf Fishing will bring getting gear ready for next trip.

Angler Warren Dennis surf fishing with me. The PT.West breaks are producing some catches in the pass. The surf if heating up with beachfront fishing with the long rods. Crabs are the ticket to success in the months of Mach to May. The drum in the first week of March were just on the front of the staging of the drum run. We scratched out 1000lbs of drum in 2 weeks (that's not a fisherman's tale) either. The bit was on fire.

Surf Fishermans Journal
Why not? half the guys I run with Surf Fish for big trout and summer time comes a new breed of fisherman that pull out a "War Hat" arsenal of weapons. A breed of fisherman that love the surf as much as I do. We all know what the surf holds it's not the typical Texas Trio of species found in the bays. It could be a big trout to a occasional beach front Tarpon out in the pocket of Bolivar with the looming South Jetty on the horizon.
Kick off to stellar year so far with the yesterday fading fast into the log book.
Arrived West of Galveston to wait at a sun up location for friend to catch up. We had just polished off some Whataburger on Stewart. The morning was slow to roll off right with small terminal issues I was having with leaders. So no need to explain that mishap as I file it away in the never do it again folder. The day drug on in a spike camp set in the surf with no fish. We moved on after dragging up the surf rods to set a drive up to N.E. of location previously at.
Here are the results from a quick change in rules.
A beach front Drum is hard to beat on med tackle ( soft spoken on the word medium). Mother nature treated this man with a good taste of what Texas has to provide via the surf. This is just a couple pics of many but the ones I thought suited best.
